National Board Certification

How do you tell people that have been rooting for you that you didn't pass? I sent out some pretty early text message (Sorry ya'll) and you talk it out...

Welp, score release day finally arrived. I've been a nervous wreck for the past few weeks anticipating if I would certify this year or not. I continually thought about the never ending hours that I had put into this. I stayed home on Oaks and St. Patrick's Day. I locked my keys in my car at the Video Place. I had a break down at school during a PLC. I used multiple reams of paper printing and reprinting through the revision process. I had my amazingly wonderful class from last year press submit. I met with my cohort every single week. I sat at the book store and studied. I did this while still working at CPK. I have no reason to be upset right?

I checked my computer last night at midnight and nothing yet. Decided to get some rest and check in the morning. Five thirty rolled around and my eyes popped open. Literaly, POP! I logged into my account from my phone and immediately knew that I hadn't passed. The scores do not show on your screen right away, but I have heard others talk about how a bar at the top will pop up that says, "Congratulations!" I didn't have that. My heart naturally sunk a little, but I'm not going to say I was surprised because I wasn't. I knew this was a process going into it. Was I/am I a little disappointed I didn't certify this time around...yes, but surprised...no. Plus, I had a dream last week I missed by 8 points. The big question was, "What did I actually score?" My score could mean the difference between spending hours slaving over video tapes and writing or studying to retake online assessments.

I clicked on my score sheet and scrolled immediately to the bottom to see how far I was from reaching the 275 goal. I scored a 271!!!!! That is 4, yes 4 points away!!!! Sometimes it is super frustrating when you get so close (like when I missed passing the Praxis by 2 points), but seeing this is/was different. Seeing my 271 gave me hope and determination to keep going! It gave me the sense of "I CAN do this!" Before you try something you never really know and this process is so vague that's you have no clue what to think at times.

My mind is already racing to decide what parts I would like to improve on in order to certify. If some of you are unaware...when you commit to this, from day one you are told it's a 1 to 3 year process. I knew this going in. Of course for the past hour and a half I have been scanning my score sheet  seeing where I can make up the most points. I've been analyzing what I could have done better. Here is my score sheet....

Basically the blue boxes are portfolio entries. They consisted of video taping lessons, writing very long in depth papers, and collecting evidence to support. I CANNOT BELIEVE I SCORED THE HIGHEST IN WRITING!!!!! It was the entry that I finished last, the entry that no one proof read and it's not one of my teaching strengths. I CANNOT BELIEVED I SCORED THE LOWEST IN SOCIAL STUDIES!!! It's the entry I completed first, had the most people read, and is on of my strongest teaching areas. I am THRILLED with my science score!!! A little disappointed with documented accomplishments because it's average. (Your Raw scores can be anywhere from 0-4 and they are weighted from there.)

The green boxes are the tests that I took in June. I am surprised at Reading because the more I learn in my Bellarmine class the more I was beginning to feel like I bombed, but I did well. I am super excited about Social Studies and even the Heath and Wellness one. I am a little on the line with analyzing student work. I remember that being a math prompt. I thought I did okay on that one. Apparently not. I was expecting a lower science assessment score so I am not surprised there. It's weird not feeling surprised that I didn't certify, but I am surprised at some of my individual scores.

AND THAT LEAVES US WITH.......... INTEGRATING THE ARTS....that one right there in the last line of the green boxes. Well, if that 1 was a 1.75 it would have turned that 6.67 to 11.67 and giving me enough to pass. BUT, apparently that's not in my plan...

What does all of this mean?!?!

Well, it means.... I am proud of what I have accomplished over the past year and I am not giving up now. All of my points are banked and I can only redo the parts that I scored less than a 2.75 on. So my options are....Social Studies portfolio entry, and three assessments (Analyzing student work (math), Knowledge of Science, and Integrating the Arts). Since the scores are weighted, I need to go for the most bang for my buck (literally). That in a way rules out Social Studies My 2 is not great, but it would take a TON of work to score higher on that. I'm definitely going to have to retake the arts one, but feel I should do another one too as support. This is not something I have to decide right now though. I'll go to a session that JCPS is holding in a couple of weeks. They will help me create a plan for moving forward.

I wish I could share my assessment exercise prompt with you, but that's not allowed so I will share the directions...

Integrating the Arts:
*Use the arts to demonstrate your ability to use the arts to develop students understanding of concepts in another discipline.
*Identify concepts in the subject area and describe an arts focused learning experience that will establish a connection for students understanding of the identified concept and provide multiple paths of access for student learning.
*Justify how the learning experience will enable students to develop a deeper understanding (appreciation) of the arts.

What does all of this mean you ask...

I means that I had to create a lesson/unit from one art discipline (music, drama, visual, and I feel like there is another one) and one content area (math, science, social studies, writing). Thing is...YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHICH TWO YOU ARE GOING TO GET. Needless to say, I need to learn my arts! I was just really hoping I faked it enough to make it....Nope, didn't happen.

I really think the most frustrating part is that I am going to wait until next November to see if I certify next year. I am guessing I will take my assessments over in the spring or early summer. If you have any resource materials on integrating the arts into the classroom pass them along. This girl needs to study! I'm thinking I can read my books to Ryann and Lilly! I know they will listen.

Thanks for listening world...

Friday High-Five!

One of the most exciting life moments that I have ever had happened at the beginning of this week and it is definitely the highlight of the week. Nothing can even come close to matching it.
This seems about right?!?! ;)

I became an aunt to Ryann Elizabeth Weiter!!!!! Being in the waiting room when my brother walked in to share the news will be something that I will never forget. The smile on his face was simply wonderful. Meeting her precious self will forever be ingrained in my heart. She brings a new level of love and happiness into our lives. It is going to be so fun seeing her and Lilly grow up together! I am also so incredibly happy for this new bonding experiences that my brothers will share. I'm having a pretty tough time finding words to describe how I feel, but I am definitely looking forward for what is going to come.

Waiting Room Selfie!

Nothing comes close to the experience of becoming an aunt so since it's November I mention 5 things I am thankful for from the week...

1.I am thankful for random acts of kindness.
2. I am thankful for my mom's chili.
3. I am thankful for my teammate at school.
4. I am thankful for sweet hugs from my kiddos at school.
5. I am thankful for my love of learning.

I hope that you had a great week!

November!!!

1. We celebrated Baby Boston (That is not the baby's name.) It's just that little baby ran the Boston Marathon with it's mommy earlier this year. He or she will have a name soon when he/she arrives. The anticipation of finding out the gender of the little one is super exciting. I go back and forth because I really have no clue or gut feeling either way. I just don't know..lol. Anyways...We had an "Open House" type shower for Kathy and Bub. It was a relaxing racing themed Saturday afternoon. My little niece or nephew is super loved already! Here are a few pics from the day.

The idea of yellow rubber duckies floating seemed fun, but they DID NOT float! lol

2. I am loving my Sundays without CPK. I do miss the wonderful people, but I have noticed a dip in stress level. I do not feel as rushed to get EVERYTHING done on Friday or Saturday. I have been able to take more time for myself and that is WONDERFUL!!!

3. I am thankful for random (Well, not random because it was Election Day.) Tuesdays off of work. Short weeks always feel the longest, but the kiddos kept it together pretty nicely this week. I guess it's the 4th and 5th days that usually make them go bonkers.

4. At Girls on the Run we had a practice 5K! I am so proud of how wonderful they did. Everyone finished and some did it was quicker and more motivated than expected!

5. I am thankful for my co-workers at school. I absolutely LOVE the people I work with. They provide support, friendship, knowledge and so much more that makes going into work that much more enjoyable every day.

6. I AM GOING TO BE AN AUNT VERY SOON, but that's for next week's post! :)

I hope you have a great week!

October!

I thought September went by fast....October seemed to pass in the blink of an eye! So many awesome moments to be thankful for...

1. The month started with  a 3 day weekend! Those are very much appreciated. Time to regroup is key for a teacher...at least it is for this one!

2. Completed The Great Pumpkin 10K!

Race #2 of 3!

3. Worked my last shift at CPK. Such a bittersweet day. The day was super special with a lot of my favorites stopping in to eat. Means a lot that they helped me close out that chapter in my life.

4. Went on a bus trip to the UofL vs. Clemson game. Such a fun weekend!

5. Had a family dinner to celebrate the rents birthday's. Family dinners are the best!

6. Went on two field trips at school. We went to BizTown and Huber's. My crazy kiddos were really good on both trips!

7. Completed my 9th 1/2 marathon after not running for 3 years. This was such a proud moment for me and definitely motivation to keep pushing forward for a 10th race soon!

8. Had such a fun night at the UofL vs. FSU game. Of course I wish we would have won, but at the end of the day...it's just a game and there were some really fun and exciting moments in that game. I.Heart.Parker!

9. I took a day off and I do not feel bad about it. :) I slept SUPER late and loved every minute of it.

10. I am currently taking a literacy class through Bellarmine and JCPS. I know you are super curious as to WHY I continue to put things on my plate. I really do LOVE learning new things! Anyways....I earned a 99% on my paper and that's pretty exciting.

11. I am going to be an Aunt soon!

12. My class participated in Kid Presidents #Soctober challenge. We collected over 100 pairs of socks to donate to a homeless shelter. Not to shabby for our first go-around.

13. National Boards has been popping in my mind a lot recently. I will know hopefully by the end of November. EEEEEKKKKKKKKK!

I hope that you had a super awesome month too!!!

9.26.14

1. I recieved a sweet card in the mail last weekend that will impact my small reading groups. I am very thankful for this thoughtful gesture and made sure that I paid it forward.

2. My little Nousin Tilly turned O-N-E and her Momma (I'm sure Kyle helped too) put together the most adorable party!

Cutie Pa-Tootie!

3. I am fortunate enough to be a KTIP (Kentucky Teacher Internship Program) mentor this year to a first year teacher. I spent the day in her 1st grade classroom one day this week. I hope that I am able to provide her with guidance and support that any first year teacher will need.  It also really made we want to go to primary even more! ;)

4. Feeling EXTREMELY thankful for the generous gift from the eBay Give Team from my dad's work eBay Enterprise! I applied for a grant for the new Girls on the Run Team at school and what do you know they presented us a check today for $3000! HOLY COW!!! I was in shock...they doubled what I even applied for!! I am so thankful that Ms. Porter and I will be able to pay for the girls registration fees, buy them proper clothing, and tennis shoes! This grant will also pave the way for the new team in the Spring! I am not sure the girls quite understand the magnitude of what this means for them, but I know that they will in years to come! My heart is full.

\
Mom and Pops came to school! Of course my kiddos were little angels in front of them!

Thank you eBay!!

Wow! That's a big check!

5. T-minus 2 shifts.

Friday Goodness!

1. So very excited that I ran in a 5K last weekend! It has been over 3 years since I have RAN in a race. I loved being able to add my racing bib to my collection. I am determined to keep making sure I have time to take care of myself!

My friend Michelle ran too!!!

2. Game 2 of the season is in the books. UofL played Murry State to bring the Cards to 2-0!

Two Peas-in-a-Pod
He may kill me for this, but we were just being super silly and this makes me laugh. Hope you laugh too!

LOVE this pic!

3. The anniversary of 9/11 was yesterday and I am so thankful that I was able to visit the memorial with my Aunt Christy and Cousin Chris.
She is B-E-A-UTIFUL!!

4. At school if we started and keep up with a classroom Twitter account we will earn $$ for our classroom. This is HUGE considering I am in desperate need of class and group sets of books.

5. I love dinner with my work family!
Love me some Mrs. Welch!!!

6. GOTR is continuing to be awesome! I am so in love with all of the goodness going on and so proud of how hard the girls are working!

Superman!!!

7. So my class is a pretty tough one this year. I'm working hard to get students the help they need and making sure they have structure, care, and consistency. It's going to take some time, but I am certain that we will get there. I am working on and feel that I am doing a pretty good job of not carrying everything home with me. When it's done...it's done. I am no longer dwelling or worrying myself to death, but instead taking everything in stride and looking forward. A classroom doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful. Despite all of the bumps we have throughout the day...wonderful things are happening!

I love my kiddos through the good, the bad, and the ugly!

8. I put my notice in at CPK. Yes people, I really did! Well, Casey did write it, but I signed it. I just couldn't bring myself to write the words out. This is what he came up with...

Dear CPK,
This is my two week notice. My last available day to work at CPK will be October 19, 2014. It's been real, it's been fun, and at times it's been real fun.
Sincerely,
Kimberly A. Weiter

Kim Fun Facts:
Kim has been employed at CPK for 3,350.
Kim has survived 15 managers, 4 of which were GMs
Kim has literally held every FOH position.
Kim was the highest paid hostess ever! $10.75
Kim met her best friends at CPK
Kim's favorite thing is STILL the BBQ salad.

My last day is actually going to be Sunday October 5, 2014. I had previously asked off for October 12th, and that would be silly to work the 5th, be off for two weeks and then come back on the 19th. SOOOOO.....

If ya want me to wait on ya... T-Minus 4 shifts to go!!!

For the record...this is a pretty tough thing for me to do.

I hope you had a fabulous week!
